On Wednesday, November 4, WMCN joined local religious and multicultural groups at the Islamic Center of Burlington – ICB who came together to emphasize that being a Muslim and being an American are not mutually exclusive.

State Representative Ken Gordon opened the service followed by Munir Gandevia, President of the ICB, who was most appreciative of everyone who came in support of the Center; Rabbi Susan Abramson of Temple Shalom Emeth; Rev. Angela Wells of the United Church of Christ Congregational; and Father Frank Silva of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church who delivered a statement on behalf of the Burlington Interfaith Clergy Group.

Members of the ICB and others were invited to write positive statements on poster boards that were taped to the wall over the graffiti. Some of the written statements included “Born in Ohio, raised in Woburn, Resident of Burlington, I am a Muslim American,” and “We are America.”

The event was a showcase of what true community means and demonstrated the power of joining forces to confront intolerance.
