In collaboration with the Kids’ Corner, and through Young Audiences of MA, the Winchester Multicultural Network is bringing Grooversity, a Brazilian drumming and cultural education ensemble, to Winchester for a free public performance. Grooversity will be performing on this Winchester Public School early-release day to an audience of up to 300 children, guardians, and Kids’ Corner staff.
Acclaimed percussionist, educator, activist and Grooversity maestro Marcus Santos leads an ensemble of drummers and dancers in a high-energy survey of Brazilian drumming styles springing from his native Bahia—the original capital of Brazil. As students are introduced to soul-stirring Afro-Brazilian spirituals, to the jazz that virtuosic street soloists make with instruments as humble as plastic buckets, to the thunderous and gleeful drumming of festival marching bands, to the modern sounds of Samba Funk, they will join in the fun with call-and-response chants and funky dance moves. Audience participants and volunteers will be called upon to get up on stage and help make music.
This event coincides with Kids’ Corner’s monthly curriculum theme of “All About Me” in which we would use this performance as an opportunity for students to reflect on identity and diversity. Opening the event to the broader public offers a greater opportunity for students to share the experience and learning with their family and peers and engage other students and adults alike to experience the rich offerings of a historically prominent Latin-American culture. By partnering with Young Audiences of Massachusetts, this program will address the Massachusetts state standards in the fine arts and other academic areas, strengthen problem-solving and critical thinking skills, nurture and increases an understanding of different cultures and traditions, nurture and increase an understanding of different art forms, support 21st century learning skills, and deepen learning in all subjects for the invited children.
Grooversity is made possible by the generous support of the Winchester Rotary Club.
