“No one speaks to racism and its cure better than David Billings, a white Southerner who has seen it all. His is a voice that needs to be heard. It is a voice with perfect pitch.”
– Charlayne Hunter-Gault, award-winning journalist, former correspondent, National Public Radio, MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, and CNN; civil rights pioneer
Haymarket is excited to announce that we will be hosting author David Billings as he joins us to discuss his new book Deep Denial.
Deep Denial, part popular history and part personal memoir, documents the 400-year racialization of the United States and how people of European descent came to be called white. Author David Billings focuses primarily on the deeply embedded notion of white supremacy and tells us why, despite the Civil Rights Movement and an African-American president, we remain, in the words of the author, a nation hard-wired by race
A leader of anti-racist workshops, a historian, organizer, and ordained United Methodist minister, David Billings has worked for half a century in the struggle for racial justice
Billings is currently employed as a workshop leader and organizer with the nation’s
premier anti-racist training organization, the New Orleans-based People’s Institute for
Survival and Beyond. Since 1983 Billings has touched the lives of thousands of
people across the country who remember him for his breadth of knowledge as a
historian, his beguiling storytelling skills, and his wit.
Books will be available for purchase at the event, proceeds from the sales of Deep Denial will go to The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (visit their facebook page for more info: Undoing Racism )
